Curriculum

Lecture Defining the concept and Building the Track Pt. 1 – Verse 1 & Pre-choruses

Mission Choosing a concept/direction and building the verse and pre-chorus production

Lecture After students lay-out the verse and pre-chorus sections of the song, they will then move onto the chorus. Do we want a drop-style chorus? A full vocal-focused chorus? Do we want a post-chorus? Do we want the chorus to start our song? Will chorus sections later in the song sound or feel different? Students will learn the different possibilities for the chorus section of the song.

Mission Work on building the chorus production

Lecture Students will flesh out the rest of the track. Do we want to start with an intro chorus? An instrumental dance intro? Do we want verse 2 to switch-up and sound different from verse 1? Do we want a breakdown in the bridge? Do we want to include a dance break? How about the outro? The instructor will demonstrate how they would approach these questions.

Mission Utilizing elements from Pt. 1 & 2, build out verse 2, the bridge, dance break, and the intro & outro sections

Lecture Students will learn the basics of toplining and how that process will usually play out when writing a song. They will learn different methods for phrasing melodies and how to vary them throughout the song to keep the song interesting. Students will also learn common techniques and best practices for recording vocals.

Mission Write your own melodies and record your demo vocals

Lecture Students will learn about how to add details to the song that will make it even more interesting, such as filling in spaces between the vocals, mimicking the melodies in the track, adding fills to smooth out transitions, and how to tighten up the track before finalizing the song. The instructor will provide examples of songs that utilize these detailed arrangement techniques that take a basic track production to the next level.

Mission Adding all necessary track details and putting the finishing touches on the song

Lecture Students who have both made it into the top 10% of attendance and showed diligent performance in their weekly assignments will have the opportunity to receive direct feedback on their song. Don’t worry if you’re not in the top 10%! The instructor will provide valuable information regarding producing through their courses and general mentoring. After the Live lecture, there will be a Q&A session with the instructor.
